History

Established in 1892 by a small group of women who met in each other’s homes, presented bi-monthly papers to one another on governmental, cultural, and religious matters. Then as now, their discussions were followed by a formal tea.

In the 1920s, the group moved their meetings to St Paul’s Parish. Outside speakers were invited, broadening topics to include civic and social affairs and concerns of the day and of the community. In 1972, meetings were moved to the Jonathan Edwards room of the First Congregational Church of Stockbridge where they continue today. In 2019, members came from twelve Berkshire towns and Canaan CT.

The purpose of the organization is to foster interest in literature, art, music, history, science, and civic affairs; to promote cordial relationships among members; and to sponsor and support programs for the welfare of the community.

The Tuesday Club donates proceeds from its dues and annual fundraiser in support of community programs. Donations have been made to the Lee and Great Barrington food pantries, Berkshire Music School, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Construct Inc, Berkshire Children and Families, The Stockbridge Library, Flying Cloud Institute, The Christian Center and the Elizabeth Freeman Center.

The Stockbridge Library Archives and Museum is the place of record for The Tuesday Club of Stockbridge, including the Finance Committee’s Annual Report.

A Collect For Club Women

Keep us, O God from pettiness,

Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.

May we put away all pretense and meet each other

face to face without self-pity or prejudice.

Teach us to put into action out better impulses,

straightforward and unafraid.

And may we strive to touch and

to know the great common heart of us all.

O Lord God, let us remember to be kind.
